Baxter - Pinot Noir - Oppenlander Vineyard
Overview: Pretty and elegant wines from Mendocino and The Baxters. Phil Baxter minimally intervenes in his wines and farms organically in every vineyard he works with. He hasn't used a new barrel in over 10 years!!! Phil spent a couple of vintages in Burgundy and learned âFrench Cellarâ methods and techniques to best showcase âterroirâ. This time included periods at Domaine de la Vougeraie in Premeaux where wine was produced from thirty- three different vineyards from Musigny and Bonne Mares to premier cru and village wines. Thanks to his French language skills Phil was chosen to oversee the cellar activities at Domaine Raymond Launay in Pommard. There he contributed to many Pommard wines as well as several grand crus. "Burgundian" gets tossed around a lot, but Baxterâs wines show more restraint and focus than most domestic producers out there.
Tasting Notes:Â Full of dark red fruits such as cranberry and black cherry. The nose starts with strawberry, bramble and quickly gives way to black tea and rose petal. Rich in minerals and focused fruit, the wine slowly unfolds to reveal its elegance and complexity displaying a warmth and gentle spice that rounds out the pallet.
Pairing:Â Turkey with herb stuffing and root vegetables
Points:Â 94, Wine Enthusiast
Format/ABV: 750 ml/13.5%
